In celebration of NCAA March Madness, Hilton Head Health has the perfect drill fitness workout for all you NCAA fans out there. Get ready to get into the game. Grab a basketball, a few cones and let's take this workout outside!

Here's some notes on the drills from the video:

1. Shuffle Sequence - 5 times

Note: To complete this sequence set up 4 cones or markers about 12 feet away from each other in a box formation.

  • Run foward (starting at the back right cone, moving forward to the front right cone)

  • Side shuffle (move to the left from the front right cone to the front left cone)

  • Back Pedal (starting at the front left cone, moving backward to the back left cone)

  • Side shuffle (move to the right from the back left cone to the back right cone)

2. Grounded Chest Pass - 10 times

  • Perform this motion just like a chest pass but bounce the ball into the ground.

3. Jump Tuck or Modification - 10 times

4. Basketball Side Slams - 10 times

  • Perform this move just like an overhead pass but bounce the ball into the ground.

Repeat this set 4 times for a fun workout.

H3 Fall Fitness Routine

by Chris Varano, H3 LOSE Well Coach

Good Weather Supports Good Health

At Hilton Head Health, we are blessed with a beautiful environment to utilize for our outdoor wellness activities. The summer months can prove to be very hot and humid making exercising indoors or in the pool a more comfortable location. Now that fall is upon us, outdoor activities utilizing the expansive landscape is encouraged to fully enjoy all the natural amenities of our ocean-front resort.

Outdoor Wellness activities - Hilton Head Health Resort and Spa

Less grind. More Fun.

Running paths, local parks with exercise equipment,  yoga at the beach or in the park, paddle boarding and kayaking are just a few of the ways to enjoy a different kind of workout that breaks out of the ordinary and challenges muscles and invigorates the senses. The days are cooler, the sun lower in the sky, and the scents of fall are in the air.  The mild Fall season naturally boosts the mind and body, making health and wellness activities more effective.

Simple Replacements Make Huge Impacts.

If exercising alone is not your thing, there are boot camps, sports teams and group bike rides to join. They are perfect for any fitness level and having a fitness “appointment” helps develop a sense of accountability. These activities reinforce that staying active and healthy doesn't require a gym membership.

So, get some friends together, swap out the happy hour for a light activity and set those fitness goals into action.

Happy Fall!!!

Get SUP and Paddle!

H3 is excited to “re-announce” our adventure fitness spring and summer series activity: SUP and SUP Yoga!

As mentioned in a previous post, SUP is an acronym for “Stand Up Paddle”. Stand Up Paddle Boarding is a surface water sport, meaning it is a sport that is performed atop a body of water. Stand Up “paddling” differs from “surfing” because essentially you do not need a wave to propel you. Instead, you propel yourself by using a paddle.

Many of you ask about SUP. The most common question I answer is what is it like? If I could relate SUP to something familiar to you, H3 Alumni and or fitness advocates, it is similar to standing on the BOSU ball. It essentially requires basic balancing abilities. The good news is however, if you become unbalanced you simply fall in the water. This, I can acknowledge, feels really nice on a warm spring day in HHI! The idea of balance is sometimes daunting to individuals whom are fearful of injury due to falling. No need to worry about injured hips and wrists with SUP. Your efforts do not permit falling atop a hard surface; as the water simply acts as a pillow for your balanced/unbalanced efforts. Kudos!

Therefore, note: By engaging in activities like SUP you are actively working to strengthen and tone muscles in your legs, buttocks and core. These are all important in FUNCTIONAL fitness. The “paddling” involved with SUP, facilitates the muscular gains in all the muscles of the back, shoulders, arms, as well as core too. Thus, it is a TOTAL body FUNCTIONAL workout!

My motto for SUP is “Strength Unites Pleasure”. It is for many a new, challenging, FUN form of cross training. It’s low impact and people of any age, and or any athletic ability level can partake.

So what are you waiting for? Come back to H3 and join me! We may even just incorporate SUP Yoga session in the upcoming Yoga Retreat (April 26th, 27th and 28th).

Get’ yourself SUP!

Friday Fitness: Work-OUT!

As many of you know, I generally do not watch much television. However, this past Tuesday evening, as I prepared to sit down early in efforts to watch The State of the Union Address on NBC, The Biggest Loser was on. This episode particulary caught my attention because one team (the “black team”) had been denied access to the gym. Particpants on the black team displayed a demoralizing distrust. The idea that they would be able to lose comparative weight at the next weigh in was daunting. The black team despartly feared the red team had a much greater advantage: the GYM.

Taking Advantage of the Outdoors

outdoor exercise

This upcoming 4th of July, declare your Independence from the gym! Start your July with a SPARK of motivation and get OUTSIDE! Studies show there are numerous benefits to exercising outside. Some examples are as follows:

  • The best part of exercising outside is it’s free! There are no membership fees to explore what’s in your own backyard. You don't need any special equipment and no matter where you are, it is always available for you to take advantage of.

  • The air is cleaner. You may be surprised to hear that the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that indoor air is more than twice as polluted as outdoor air.

  • A free daily dose of Vitamin D. Outdoor exercise is a great way to get your daily vitamin D. FYI: This is especially important if you are overweight — a recent study found that people who are overweight are almost twice as likely to be deficient in vitamin D.
