5th Annual Devin's Dash Memorial 5K

Despite the inclement weather, this year's Devin's Dash was a success! With the help of our sponsors, volunteers and race participants we raised almost $6000 for Happiness is Camping. Amazing! The overall race winner and first male was H3’s own Experience Planner Alex Santa, and the first female race was winner Kim Stanziola. The after party included fresh H3 smoothies and healthy snacks compliments of the H3 Culinary Team, great music, a raffle drawing for the amazing prizes donated by our sponsors, and of course, post-race stretching to prevent any injuries. The official Devin’s Dash Page is here http://www.h3daily.com/devinsdash/ to see the prizes, more race results and sponsors. If you missed this year's Devin's Dash Memorial 5K Run/Walk held at Hilton Head Health, here's a quick photo recap.

Devin's Dash Training - week 4

Runners Fuel

Before a Race

Pre-race breakfast should be 2-3 hours before the race that are low in fiber, fat and protein. Choose something that is easy to digest.

Drink water up to 30 minutes before the race starts. This means you will need to set an alarm extra early that morning.

Days leading up to your race, focus on eating lean protein like chicken or fish and healthy carbohydrates to each meal, such as: vegetables, fruits, whole grain pasta, and breads. Stay away from processed foods high in trans fat and cholesterol. If you want to “carbo-load”, do it 2 days before the race instead of the night before. A lot of times we don’t sleep well the night before a race and anxiety can cause indigestion. It is also critical that you remain well hydrated by doubling up on your water intake days before the race.

During a Race

Before a race, inquire about the number of water stations along the course. Take advantage of these stations to stay hydrated during the race, especially during hot and humid conditions.

If your race will last over 60-90 minutes, drink fluids that contain carbohydrate and sodium. The carbohydrate will help provide energy during the race; the sodium may help drive you to drink more and promote fluid retention. AmericanCollege of  Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends drinks that contain 4-8% carbohydrates.

After a Race

Make sure to replenish your fluids lost after a race. The ACSM recommends that you drink 2 cups of fluid for every pound of body weight lost during your exercise activity.

Friday Fitness: Speed Training

Tomorrow is race day here at Hilton Head Health. It is the eve of our 3rd annual Devin’s Dash and the air around H3 is buzzing with excitement as people get ready to travel the 3.1 miles from start to finish. Everyone goes into the race with a different goal in mind, some are going just to complete. Others are looking to improve their time and set a new PR (personal record). One thing that I often hear is, “aright I have done the impossible..I know that I can run a 5K without stopping! Now I want to work on getting faster!”  So how do I go about building up speed?

First off, it is important to have a foundation of training. You should be able to consistently run at least 3.1 miles. If you are still building your base and growing the amount of time that you are running, focus on that first. Having that solid foundation is crucial for building up speed and injury prevention. Speed work should make up no more than 20% of your total weekly mileage and should be done on non consecutive days.

Here are 4 workouts that can be done to build speed:

  • Striders

  • Tempo

  • Interval

  • Fartlek

Striders: These are short burst of swift running for about 30 seconds. Begin on a flat straightway, gradually accelerate for first 10 second to a challenging speed maintain for about 10 seconds and then decelerate for last 10 seconds. Keep the body upright and relaxed. Focus on a quick and relaxed cadence.  Repeat about 6 times post workout. Great place to do these repetitions is barefoot on a grass.

Tempo: This is a swift, sustained pace workout designed to build up the pace and encourage you to run faster for set period of time. For the 5Kers out there a great tempo workout is do a 5-10 min warm up at an easy pace. Follow that with 15-20 mins at a more challenging pace. Then finish the workout with 5-10 mins a easy pace. How do I determine how fast I should run? The quick and dirty advice is find a pace that it uncomfortable and hold there for the 15-20 mins. How often too we find our conversation pace and fall into a routine. This workout is designed to push you out of that routine and out of your set pace. It is more uncomfortable but that is where the speed is built!

Interval: Intervals are structured bouts of speed for a specific distance or time, followed by a specific recovery period. For those of you who have built your base off of Couch to 5K plans, these are walk/jog intervals where the walk is the recovery and the jog is the speed. These can be done my distance (the track is a great setting for these) or by time. If going by distance at the track a great workout is run 200 (half a loop) at a challenging but sustainable speed, then jog a 400 (one whole lap). Repeat this 6-8 times.

Fartlek: This is Swedish for “speed play” and that is what this workout is all about, playing around with speed intervals. They are unstructured intervals that can be included into a workout. Ex. From here to this fence I am going to run hard. Find that challenging speed, accelerate to the fence and then settle back into conversation pace. These can be a fun way to shake up the usual route. Just like the other workouts, keep good body position, body upright and relaxed.

Devin's Dash - One Month To Go!

If you subscribe to our weekly e-newsletter, you already know today marks one month until Devin’s Dash 2012!

This will be my second time attending Devin’s Dash and my first time running in it. Last year I had the opportunity to cheer for everyone as they crossed the finish line. I can’t tell you how impactful it was seeing everyone’s smiling faces and hearing friends and family cheer for their loved ones. I watched as each person received a high-five from Robert Moore and embraced Adam Martin and Kelia Bennett while thanking them for all their encouraging words. Of all the 5K’s I’ve attended, I’ve realized Devin’s Dash is truly one that embraces the spirit of what the race is all about. Not everyone participating knew Devin, myself included, but after all the touching stories from those who did, you can actually feel his energy at the race. For many, Devin’s Dash is a time when they complete something they never thought they could do—their first 5K; for others, it’s a time to reunite with friends; but for everyone, it’s a time to give thanks for all the influential people you’ve come across in life.

I am looking forward to honoring Devin and all those in my family who have faced cancer by running in this year’s race. I am also excited about raising money for such an amazing cause. This year’s event proceeds benefit Happiness Is Camping, a summer camp for children affected by cancer run by a former H3 Guest. Recently, Adam volunteered at the camp and shared some of his pictures below.

If you haven’t done so already, I encourage you to register for the race. Registering really is the first step in holding you accountable. I also recommend joining the Devin’s Dash Facebook event page. Every time I check the page I get even more excited about the event! You can also message me at aglover@hhhealth.com if you would like to contribute pictures to the Devin’s Dash board on Pinterest.

So with one month to go, I bid you happy training and hope to see you on Sept. 22nd!

Friday Fitness - Devin's Dash 2011: Why We Run

Happy Friday everyone!

It is the day before Devin’s Dash and there is quite a buzz around H3! Former guests are reuniting and new guests are getting excited about the upcoming race. What amazes me is how many people have an emotional connection to this race. Some are friends of Devin’s and really connected with him while staying at H3. Others have their own personal stories of fighting cancer that are inspirational and moving. I want to linger in the hallways and listen to the stories of those who are here; they are all inspirational and moving.

Below are a few people I had the opportunity to speak with this week who will be participating in the 5k tomorrow. We talked about what motivates you to participate, what are you racing for?

I want to give a special shout out to the over 50 people we had participating in our Devin’s Dash training program! We had first time 5k participants and seasoned 3.1 veterans.  It was really enjoyed the ability to train along beside you all and I’m so excited about the progress you have made and stories you have shared. I wish you all the best of luck tomorrow!

I encourage all of you, wherever you are, to get out tomorrow; either for an after dinner thermal walk, or a stroll through the park with friends.  Enjoy the fall weather and the ability to be active! Have a great one!

What to eat before and after a workout!

eating_before_workout

Now there are a lot of different ideas on what is best to eat before and after a workout. Some people think drinking protein shakes are the best and others are believers in carbohydrate loading. The misconception about carbohydrate loading is that you need to eat a half box of pasta to carbohydrate load; that may put you in a carbohydrate coma instead.

The main idea of eating properly before exercising or even before a 5k, is that you are giving your body enough “fuel” or energy to be able to perform at your maximum potential. Complex carbohydrates such as whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, oatmeal, and whole grain cereals are great to eat before a workout. Complex carbohydrates will break down a little slower in the blood and release glycogen slower, so you don’t burn all your energy at the beginning of your workout. Carbohydrates are stored in the muscle cells themselves, that way your muscles themselves are providing you with energy as you workout. Just remember, you’re providing your body with energy. Don’t eat so much that you weigh yourself down.

Consuming good sources of fruits and vegetables are also important, but pick some of the vegetables that are not quite as high in fiber. This helps avoid stomach cramps during exercise. Such items would be carrots, green beans, asparagus, tomatoes, and cucumbers. These provide good sources of carbohydrates and a little bit of fiber, but not enough to give you discomfort or potential gas.

Protein is the next important ingredient to the balance in your pre-exercise workout. But remember, unless you are competing in an Iron Man contest, you don’t need an excessive amount of protein. Perhaps 2-3 ounces of turkey breast, 2 hard boiled eggs, ½ cup of cottage cheese or maybe even an 8 ounce glass of skim milk should be sufficient amount of protein before a typical workout or 5K.

Make sure you eat something at least 2 hours after your workout is completed. Some great items would be a balance of carbohydrates and protein to refuel the muscles and rebuild them, low fat yogurt and berries, low fat cottage cheese and an apple, two ounces of chicken breast on a slice of whole wheat bread, or even a ½ ounce of nuts with a banana. Either way you need to have a balance of protein and carbohydrates to rebuild your energy stores, your muscle tissue.

The bottom line is to eat good quality carbohydrates and moderate amounts of protein to give you that full feeling and to satisfy you before you exercise. Working out on an empty stomach never is a good thing as you have not filled your take with energy to perform at your best. Small meals throughout the day will keep you feeling fueled throughout the day, so before your workout you should have the energy to exercise at your maximum potential. Hope this helps as you prepare for this year’s Devin’s Dash Memorial 5K!

The Countdown has Begun!

devins_dash_logo

One month from now, on October 8th, we will be hosting our second annual Devin’s Dash Memorial 5K. Hilton Head Health hosts this annual event in honor of beloved staff member Devin Sheaffer who passed away in 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. As many of you who have visited H3 before know, staff are more than just the people who book your reservations, cook your meals and show you a few workout routines. We honestly care. Devin was an ear for those who needed someone to talk to and a friend to many. His dedication to health went beyond work hours as Devin was also an avid runner. What better way than to honor a friend, than with a race in his name.

Although I did not have the pleasure of meeting Devin, based on all the stories I’ve heard I feel as though I know him. And with all the care and little details of the race that reflect Devin’s personality, I know that he is truly missed. Although I don’t know Devin, I do know several people who have been affected by cancer. In fact, an estimated 11.7 million Americans alive today have had cancer. Organizations such as the American Cancer Society, have worked tirelessly to raise funds to help save lives all over the nation. Last year Hilton Head Health, and Devin’s Dash sponsors and participants raised over $10,000 for the cause. This year we hope to surpass that!

With the addition of the Devin’s Dashers 5K training plan and the Sponsorship Expo the night before the race, we are determined to make this year even bigger than last year! With only one month until race day, join us in spreading the word and raising funds for the American Cancer Society in a fit and healthy way!

Here’s how you can help:

  • Register for this year’s race!

  • Select ‘attending’ on the Devin’s Dash Event Page on Facebook and change your Facebook profile picture to the Devin’s Dash logo.

  • If you can’t make it to Devin’s Dash this year, you can still make a contribution in Devin’s name by donating here.

  • Encourage one another by commenting on the Devin’s Dash Facebook Event Page and on the H3 Facebook Wall! The Devin’s Dashers Training Group is on Week 4 of training; be sure to give them shout outs on the H3 Facebook Wall!

The countdown has officially begun!

Prep for Devin's Dash: Foot Care 101

As Devin's Dash draws closer, I'd like to remind you of the importance in wearing the proper shoe for running. Here's a post from last year that discusses how to determine the right knid of running shoe for you.

[caption id="attachment_5969" align="alignnone" width="420" caption="Devin's Dash 2010"]Devin's Dash 2010[/caption]

One of te best ways to care for your feet is to invest in a good pair of running or walking shoes.

When you get fitted for a new pair of running or walking shoes, unless you are here at H3 and can attend our Shoe Seminar, be sure to go directly to the specialists: a sporting goods store, running store, or podiatrist. Ask them to help you evaluate the arch of your foot.

Are you…

  1. Flat-footed –your feet have low arches. They tend to roll inward as you run or walk. If this is you, you should look for a shoe that offers more stability.

  2. High arches- your feet roll outward when walking. If this describes you, you should look for a cushioned shoe with greater flexibility to help absorb shock. Insoles, inserted inside your shoes, can also help to support your heels and arches. Inserts can be bought separately by shoe size as well as needs.

  3. "Normal"- your arches don't fit into either extreme. If this is you, you have no worries. Most shoes are made to fit “normal” types.

In addition to evaluating your arches, when choosing running or walking shoes be mindful of pronation, the way that your foot moves after striking the ground. Below are the common types:

Come join us for a morning of PURE ENERGY

Devin Dash 5K

Devin was someone who could brighten a room with his smile, lift your spirits with his optimism and heal your aches with the touch of his hands.

After a courageous battle with cancer, Devin Sheaffer, a beloved colleague to all at Hilton Head Health (H3) and dear friend to many, passed away on August 26th, 2010. As a massage therapist here at H3, Devin’s compassion for our Guests and dedication to his work was clear in everything he said and did. One Guest put it best when she said, “I didn’t know whether to schedule a massage with Devin for the massage itself or to just spend time with him.” He was the type of person who had the ability to connect and befriend anyone he met. He will truly be missed but never forgotten.

devins_dash_logo_for_blog

In honor and loving memory of Devin, H3 will be hosting a 5K Run/Walk through the scenic paths of Shipyard Plantation on Saturday, October 16th at 8am. We welcome all Guests, along with the general public, to come out and join us as we celebrate Devin’s life.

After the event, there will be a poolside party where we’ll offer post-race snacks and smoothies, announce the race winners, and raffle off prizes. Raffle prizes include a bicycle provided by the Bike Doctor, a tennis racquet provided by Van Der Meer Tennis and an H3 Day Pass—just to name a few!
