We are all smiles here at Hilton Head Health! Not only because it's the 1st Day of Spring but it's International Day of Happiness. Ok, we admit it. We're not only happy today but everyday because we help make our Guests healthier and happier by promoting health and fitness and showing them how to achieve overall wellness! But today, we have a very special dance just for this amazing holiday! So, enjoy and feel free to dance along with us or do a cartwheel or 2!

We want to know what makes you happy. If you're a past Guest, tell us one of your happiest moments at Hilton Head Health. If you're still planning your trip to H3, tell us what makes you happy.

Fitness Friday: Having FUN (H3 Gangham Style)

Fun (noun): enjoyment, amusement, or lighthearted pleasure; more specifically, fun can be described as playful often boisterous actions or speech.

I like to think this definition could also end with “produces laughter” or “lack of serious purpose.” In order to fully understand the meaning behind fun it is important to understand what fun is NOT. The antonyms include the following: boring, dreary, dull, monotonous, tiresome, and more. I don’t know one person who wants to have a boring, tiresome and dreary life so let’s talk more about having FUN…

What may be fun for you may not be enjoyable for another—each one of us finds amusement in different things. Perhaps that is why amusement parks are now called theme parks; not everyone finds roller coasters and “spin as fast as you can” rides amusing in the least bit. However, once fun activities and exercises are discovered, they become times when we are most alive, engaged, creative and perhaps even a little spontaneous. For some, it could be a race, while others find more pleasure in a long group bike ride or dance class. Take a moment to write down activities and exercises you consider fun.

You may wonder why this week’s video was centralized on a silly dance created by a YouTube phenomenon. First, a little spontaneity never hurt anyone. Second, the dance (Gangham Style) is hilarious. Third, we had a blast making this video—if only you could have seen our bloopers! Now go out and have a FUN weekend :-)

Woohoo! One Month Down!

Since January 1st, I have been determined to make this year different. So far, I have to say that I am pretty proud of myself for sticking with my commitment to fit more physical activity into my weekly schedule. Working out is now a priority and, when I can, I try to schedule the rest of week around my workout routine. If you’re like me, you get bored running on the treadmill or lifting weights in the gym. I’m a group fitness gal and truly find it a pleasure to workout with others. Not only do I push myself further, but the time seems to just fly by when I’m having fun working out with friends.

This year I decided to try something new and somehow convinced a few of my friends from H3 to join me. Many of you have taken this class during your visit to H3 but believe it or not, very few of us staff members have actually attempted this high-energy, music-thumping aerobic class. I’m talking about Zumba, the dance fitness class that has mothers, daughters and even grandmothers strutting their stuff on the dance floor. Don’t get me wrong, plenty of men Zumba too (only the boldest and bravest J)!

According to the official Zumba Fitness® website, Zumba is the only Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that blends red-hot international music, created by Grammy Award-winning producers, and contagious steps to form a "fitness-party" that is downright addictive. Since its inception in 2001, the Zumba program has grown to become the world's largest – and most successful – dance-fitness program with more than 12 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages taking weekly Zumba classes in over 110,000 locations across more than 125 countries.

So, five H3 staff members and I decided to step outside our comfort zones to see what all the buzz was about. After attending the first class, I knew I was hooked. Whether I look good doing it or not, I love to dance and the thing I love about Zumba most is that everyone is encouraged to put their own flava into the moves. It’s fairly easy to pick up and everyone is cheering one another on. You can make it as intense as you’d like, averaging several hundred calories burned per session, but above all, you’re there to have fun. The variety of ages in the classes also surprised me. The women who attend our local Zumba studio are there every night giving it their all and I find their excitement contagious and exhilarating.

The moral of this story is, we’ve made it one month into the year and we’re still going strong with our goals! If you think you’ve fallen off the wagon a little, pick yourself back up starting today! It’s never too late to re-dedicate your life to health. If you’re getting bored with your routine, try something new. Maybe you’ll like it, maybe you won’t but you’ll never know until you try. I’ll share the two mantras that have really stuck with me this year and hopefully, they’ll help you as well.

“Never put off for tomorrow what you can do today,” and “Just for today I will…”

So get out there and as my Zumba instructor would say, “Shake it!”

(I found the image below on the Hilton Head Health Pinterest page. It pretty much sums up how I feel during Zumba, which is pretty awesome in case you couldn't tell. :-) )

From an Intern’s Perspective: You’ll never believe what H3 guests love to do

hip-hop-silhouette-2When the other interns and I first arrived to H3, Wii Sport was a new class being offered as a fitness option. If you have never played on a Wii before, it is a gaming system by Nintendo that doesn’t require your typical joint-stick remote, but requires a wireless remote that moves according to your movement.  It usually comes with Wii Sport, which can be a really fun game but gets a little boring after awhile. The interns and I decided H3 needed a game that would keep people interested for the whole hour time period, get people moving, and get people excited… that’s when we decided to purchase Just Dance.

Just Dance is a game in which players learn (follow along to) dance moves to popular songs. There is a wide range of music from the 80’s and 90’s featured on the game. It only took one class before word spread the Wii Dance was a must attend fitness class. After dancing to all the songs on Just Dance about 4 to 5 times, a guest graciously donated Just Dance 2, which features even more songs and an even wider variety of music. Just Dance 2 has songs such as “It’s Raining Men” by Weather Girls (which I saw Adam dance to a few times…hehe), “Tik Tok” by Ke$ha, and another guest favorite, “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner. But the song that took the cake, the all time guest favorite was none other than “Jump” by Kris Kross!!
